It has been a tradition for KDU’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA) to facilitate the challenging process of securing a dream career or landing a decent place to do internships for KDU students who are graduating and looking to begin a new chapter in their lives. As a part of its continuous effort to keep graduating students with the most current development trend of the industry, as well as bridging up academic with industrial placement or formal employment, SHTCA of KDU University College recently organised the ‘SHTCA Career Day & Internship Fair” on 12 October 2017 at its flagship campus located at Utropolis, Glenmarie Shah Alam.

The objective of this event is to provide KDU students with ample opportunities to have a face to face discussion with real industry players in order to inquire and apply for an actual job on campus. The event was attended by mostly the Human Resource representatives from major industry players in the Hospitality industry worldwide. According to Mr. Sharizal Kamaruddin, Academic Department Head of SHTCA, there were prominent brands of 5-star hotels, renowned local and international restaurants, along with recruiting agencies for renowned hoteliers and restaurants in Singapore and the United States of America.

Over 30 organisations from the hospitality, tourism and culinary industry participated in this event with some of the prominent names include Marriot International, HILTON Worldwide, RPT Singapore, Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, DORSETT Hospitality International, Ascott International and many more. These companies are exclusively invited by KDU to open their doors and provide lucrative opportunities to KDU students to submit their CVs and apply for their dream job directly on campus. Graduating and current students from the SHTCA’s programmes - Diploma of Culinary Arts, Diploma in International Hotel Management, Bachelor of Hospitality Management and Bachelor in Culinary Management; visited the exhibition booths which opened from 10am to 3pm. On top of exploring employment opportunities, there were some organisations that offered on-the-spot interviews with the candidates.
According to the fact provided by KDU’s SHTCA, over 72% of its students do their internships abroad and secured job opportunities with renowned companies such as Wynn Macau, G Hotel Singapore, Regent Hotel Singapore, Jardine Enchante Restaurant Singapore, Marriott Marquis Centre DOHA, UAE, Per Aquum Maldives, The Pine Garden restaurant Singapore, Le Meridien Al Aqlah, UAE and many others. Overall, 96% of KDU’s SHTCA graduates got employed within the 6 months of graduation in most of the hotels and brand both locally and internationally.

It is hoped that SHTCA Career & Internship Fair such as this would be able to bring more possibilities to KDU students and accommodate potential employers to find the best quality candidates to join their workforce and contribute to the company’s growth and sustainability. More importantly, it could generate better graduate employability rates which could reflect back to the standard of education that KDU has to offer to fellow Malaysians.
