The Maths and Science Quiz, an annual event organised by KDU College’s School of Pre University Studies (SPUS), was held on 26 April with more than 500 secondary schools maths and science whiz around Klang Valley competing for the top ten prizes.

The annual quiz, which is in its 7th year, aimed to test form five students’ knowledge in the subjects of Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and General Knowledge, with 50 questions in merely 40 minutes – literally a test on speed and accuracy!

“SPUS has organised the Maths and Science Quiz for seven consecutive years, and this competition is not only meant to test students’ knowledge, but also to cultivate their speed and accuracy in their,” said Ms Sathyavathy Rasanayagam, the Head of the SPUS.

The competitive spirit was clearly strong, as students were seen prepping themselves mentally and emotionally for the test, early in the morning, as they arrived at KDU College in Damansara Jaya. Out came the scientific calculators in the auditorium, where the competition was held, and the students were all ready to flex their intellectual muscles. One could literally hear a pin drop as the competition began.

Immediately after 40 minutes of tense moment, the participants were treated to campus tours and a glimpse of how campus life is like in KDU College. “Students from the School of Pre-University Studies are often high achievers, and we want the high schoolers see themselves how our student ambassadors have learnt ways to balance study and co-curricular activities,” said Ms Sathyavathy.
She added on, “The rapport and small ratio between students and lecturers, as well as our cosy environment and family-like community is what sets us apart. We’re both result and people-oriented.”
Soon enough, it was time for the prize-giving ceremony and the participants couldn’t wait to see if their effort have paid off.  Big winners included Chong Hwa Independent High School and SMJK Katholik, as both schools took home 3 prizes respectively.

Yang Zi Yun, a UEC Senior Middle 2 student from Chong Hwa Independent High School, won the first prize and walked away with RM300 cash prize for herself and RM300 for her school. Second prize went to Ernest Choy Yong En from SMK BUD (4) with RM200 cash prize for individual and school respectively, while third prize went to Yeoh Sheng Kai from SMJK Katholik with a RM100 cash prize for individual and school respectively.

Sharing her thoughts upon winning the first prize, Yang mentioned she didn’t expect that she’d win the first prize as she didn’t do much preparation for the quiz. “I like Maths and Science, and I participated in the competition with what I’ve learnt in school, with no extra prep work, which is why this win came as such a surprise,” she said.

“By winning this prize, I think I will somehow inspire my schoolmates and make the school proud. As for myself, I will certainly pursue my dream of being a medical doctor,” Yang explained.
